There are two engraved brass plates, one a short history of the poet and the other with the sonnet. In the center is a representative photo of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1881). Below it is a handwritten and signed sonnet in brown ink.
It reads:
A feeling of sadness and longing
that is not akin to pain
and resembles sorrow only
as the mist resembles the rain.
