Very pretty Japanese Maki-e byobu (folding screen) depicts blossoming Sakura and Asters. Raised relief with lacquer - Maki-e art technique. Signed by artist. The reflective property of lacquer allows lacquered surface to increase perceived brightness and visual depth of this byobu, creating a subtle dialogue between light and shadow, where the light touches the surface without fully penetrating, revealing shadows and textures. Lacquer, gouache and ink on paper. Silk brocade border. Painted gold wood frame with beautifully engraved copper corners. Custom fabric on back over the original paper backing. Two vintage brass holders and four standard metal hangers and tiny nails are included. Japan, Showa Era, circa 1970s.
Good condition - no damage to the painting, minor age wear to the frame and hangers; custom recovered back with thick fabric over the original paper backing slightly affected the structure of this screen and caused separation of the 2 joints between the 2nd and 3rd panels (image #15); the upper and lower joints between the 2nd and 3rd panels are still working very well, as well as other joints; clean, sturdy. This screen should be folded only in the correct way - with the painting inside, not to damage other joints.
