Beautiful antique American mahogany spinet writing desk dating to approximately the 1920s.
Designed to resemble a small spinet piano when closed, this ingenious desk transforms into a surprisingly substantial writing station. The hinged upper section opens to reveal a fitted interior with numerous pigeonholes and storage compartments, while the large front panel drops down to create the writing surface.
The interior features multiple divided correspondence compartments, decorative fretwork, reeded side panels and additional storage areas. A full-width lower drawer provides further storage when the desk is closed.
The exterior is finished in a rich, dark mahogany and features handsome architectural molding, turned and faceted legs, geometric corners and a decorative figured-wood accent centered along the front apron.
When completely closed, the piece has the elegant appearance and relatively compact footprint of a console table, making it particularly useful in a study, library, living room, bedroom or entryway. When opened, it becomes a remarkably functional writing desk.
The desk remains structurally solid and presents beautifully for a piece approximately a century old. It retains age-appropriate surface wear, including minor scratches, scuffs and finish wear consistent with normal antique use. These have intentionally been left untouched rather than refinishing the piece and removing its antique character.
No definitive manufacturer’s label has been located. An old factory/inventory-style marking is present underneath and is shown in the photographs.
A wonderful example of early-20th-century American convertible furniture and a particularly attractive variation of the classic spinet writing desk.

This desk bears the number 357, corresponding to a documented Bay View Furniture Co. Style No. 357 spinet desk produced in Holland, Michigan. Based on the style number, construction, form and documented Bay View examples, this piece is attributed to Bay View Furniture Co., circa 1920s. No surviving full manufacturer’s paper label has been located, so the maker is presented as an attribution rather than a definitive identification.
