This is beautiful vintage ‘knee-hole’ desk was manufactured by the famous Karpen Furniture Company. It has intricate inlay panels and perfectly curved legs that complement the small curve in the front drawer. The quality continues inside with perfectly fitting drawers that don’t droop down or fall out when pulled in and out. From my initial research I was able to confirm this piece was built between 1924-1933.
S. Karpen & Bros. was a Chicago-based furniture manufacturing firm that mainly specialized in upholstered furniture, along with other high-end furniture.
The firm was established in 1880 under the leadership of Solomon Karpen. His eight brothers also participated in the firm. One brother, Michael Karpen, established a West Coast branch of the firm, "S. Karpen Brothers of California," in Huntington Park, California, in 1932. They continued to operate until 1951.
This desk has a custom made protective tempered glass top, which has a small chip in it – which means the desk underneath remains undamaged. There are a few imperfections on the piece consistent with age. When the glass top is removed some light ‘sun’ damage can be seen to the original finish, but overall in excellent original condition with no repairs made.
The desk measures approximately 48”Wx24”Dx31’H.
