A vintage black and white Art Deco vase pair in glazed earthenware produced by the Steingutfabriken Velten-Vordamm factory in Germany, … Read more A vintage black and white Art Deco vase pair in glazed earthenware produced by the Steingutfabriken Velten-Vordamm factory in Germany, active 1913/14 until 1931. The timeless design is attributed to Walther Stock (active 1910-1925).

Each gourd shaped vase blends Art Deco styling with Bauhaus geometric influences using a simple and stylish hand-painted glaze of vertical black and white stripes accenting a fluted texture. The rims, interiors, and bases are glossy black.

Both objects are in very good condition with age appropriate crazing and a couple of small glaze pops. Each vase measures 4.75 in. height x 5.75 in. diameter (at widest), marked Vordam / Germany / S on the base. An an example of this vase is part of the RISD Museum collection; similar Bauhaus era Stock designs for Velten Vordamm are included in the collection of the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt Design Museum.

Steingut-Fabriken Velten-Vordamm was located outside of Berlin in Germany. A number of the company's employees made important artistic contributions gained through associations with artistic organizations including the Deutscher Werkbund and the Bauhaus School. See less
