Wonderful collection of 13 vintage handmade Venezuelan character dolls, each approximately 6½ inches high and individually dressed in elaborate miniature clothing representing a variety of occupations, social figures and traditional characters.
The collection includes military figures, formally dressed gentlemen and women, a bride, domestic and working figures, and a child. Each doll is individually constructed with hand-finished facial features, textile clothing and miniature accessories, then mounted on a black display base with a metal support.
Three figures retain handwritten period identification tags specifically identifying Venezuela, providing important provenance for the collection. One identifies a “House Maid Venezuela,” while another carries an original period description identifying a Venezuelan character. The latter retains historical terminology characteristic of its period and is preserved as part of the object’s original history.
Particularly appealing is the remarkable variety of miniature textiles and details—lace, veils, hats, uniforms, handbags, flowers and carefully tailored garments. Displayed together, the 13 figures form an impressive and unusual collection of Venezuelan folk and cultural art.
