Each plate features an elaborate cobalt-blue floral and scroll border surrounding a central floral motif. The slightly softened, flowing quality of the blue transfer gives the plates the rich character associated with 19th-century transfer-decorated ceramics. The undersides bear the S.C.R. impressed mark, identifying them with Società Ceramica Richard. Founded in Milan in the 19th century, the company merged with Ginori in 1896 to form Richard-Ginori, one of Italy's most celebrated ceramic manufacturers. These plates are particularly appealing as a complete set of five and would work beautifully for table service, a plate wall, or as part of a collection of antique Italian blue-and-white ceramics.
