A monumental antique pewter charger or large deep serving platter, notable for its impressive scale, substantial weight, historic ownership marks, and beautifully aged surface.
Sourced in Northern Italy, this exceptional piece measures approximately 16.865 inches (42.8 cm) in diameter and weighs a substantial 1,714 grams (3.78 lbs). Its broad rim, deep well, and unusually large proportions give it tremendous visual presence, making it equally compelling as a functional antique serving piece or as sculptural wall and interior décor.
The underside is particularly interesting and bears a group of historic touchmarks and verification-style stamps. These include a circular mark incorporating the wording “D’ANGLETERRE,” together with crowned “BT” and “R” marks. The exact workshop and country of manufacture would benefit from further specialist attribution, but the marks strongly suggest a piece made within the European pewter trade and possibly intended for export or international commerce.
The front rim carries deeply impressed historic ownership initials reading approximately “G ✹ B ✹ G,” while the reverse rim includes additional engraved initials or inventory marks, including “G ✹ R ✹ C,” together with tally-like notches. These successive marks are especially appealing, giving the charger the layered character of an object that remained in household or estate use across generations.
The pewter retains a rich, dark charcoal-gray patina with extensive old surface wear, utensil marks, scratches, oxidation, and other signs of long use. It has been left unpolished, preserving the natural antiquarian finish and character of the metal.
Its size is particularly impressive. At nearly 17 inches across, this charger has the scale and architectural presence sought by collectors and interior designers for gallery walls, sideboards, mantels, hutches, and layered European interiors.
A handsome and highly decorative example of early European pewter with exceptional scale, surface, and historic markings.
