A wonderful matched pair of 19th century Chinese export rose mandarin porcelain candlesticks modeled in the form of elephants. Each elephant is richly hand decorated in the vibrant famille rose palette associated with rose mandarin porcelain, combining figural sculpture with the exuberant ornament for which Chinese export wares are so admired.
The elephants stand with their trunks gracefully positioned and support candle cups upon their backs. The pair is matched rather than being exact mirror images, an appealing characteristic that underscores their individually handmade and decorated nature.
Unusual in both form and scale, these sculptural candlesticks have tremendous decorative presence and would be equally compelling displayed with candles or simply enjoyed as Chinese porcelain objects. The pair remains in wonderful antique condition.
