An early rope-edge example … Read more Rare first-generation molded fiberglass armchair designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller, circa 1950. An early rope-edge example distinguished by the reinforced perimeter of the shell and richly visible fiberglass fibers.

The naturally aged parchment-yellow shell has developed beautiful color, translucency and patina over roughly 75 years. Paired with an early metal X-base, giving the chair a particularly sculptural presence.

The chair remains sturdy, functional and comfortable for seating. Vintage condition with surface wear, discoloration, visible cracks/lines in the fiberglass and oxidation to the base. It is unknown whether any areas of the shell were repaired earlier in its life. Shock mounts have been replaced. Please review photographs closely for condition.

An increasingly scarce example from the formative period of Charles and Ray Eames' experiments with molded fiberglass seating.
