A handsome pair of signed L.E. Partridge Connecticut bench-made continuous-arm Windsor chairs dating to circa 1960s, beautifully executed in the tradition of early American Windsor furniture. Each chair features the wonderfully sculptural continuous bow sweeping from one arm around the high back, filled with a graceful array of slender spindles. The generous proportions and tall arched backs give the pair considerable presence while retaining the light, airy quality that has made the continuous-arm Windsor one of the most enduring American chair forms. Partridge was associated with D.R. Dimes & Company, the well-regarded New England maker known for traditionally crafted reproductions of early American furniture, providing useful context for the quality and historically informed construction seen in these chairs.
The chairs are traditionally constructed with deeply shaped saddle seats, turned arm supports and legs, slender back spindles, and stretchered bases. Particularly appealing is the warm, richly varied surface, which allows the grain and natural character of the wood to remain an important part of the design. The visible wedged construction through the seats and bows reflects traditional Windsor chairmaking methods, while subtle turnings on the legs and supports add just enough decorative detail. Both chairs bear the L.E. Partridge maker’s stamp beneath the seat, identifying them as the work of this Connecticut craftsman.
The pair is in nice vintage condition, with scattered scratches, small marks, surface wear, and variations in color and finish consistent with age and normal use. The seats and arms have developed particularly attractive character from use, including visible old marks and natural variation that suit the handmade nature of the chairs beautifully. They remain sturdy, comfortable, and highly usable, offering the craftsmanship and character of traditional American Windsor furniture without being too precious for everyday living.
