A substantial mid-twentieth-century American studio pottery lidded vessel with a strongly sculptural Modernist presence. The rounded body rises to a narrow neck and fitted cover, while the architectural four-footed base gives the form an unusually grounded, almost structural character.
The hand-worked stoneware surface is finished in a deep brick-red to oxblood glaze with natural variation in tone and texture. Raised linear applications extend vertically across the shoulders, framing a large dark recessed oval element on the front, while three smaller irregular applied medallions animate the lower body. The fitted lid incorporates a projecting handle or finial, completing the vessel’s assertive, highly individual profile.
At nearly 12 inches high and approximately six pounds, the piece has considerable physical and visual weight. Its abstract form, dimensional surface treatment and architectural base make it particularly effective as a standalone sculptural ceramic object. The vessel is unsigned and was acquired in Northern California.
