A beautiful antique Eastern French tin-glazed faience plate (Faïence de l'Est), dating approximately to the mid-to-late 19th century, c. 1840–1880. … Read more A beautiful antique Eastern French tin-glazed faience plate (Faïence de l'Est), dating approximately to the mid-to-late 19th century, c. 1840–1880. The plate is entirely hand painted with a classic rose creuse (“hollow rose”) floral motif: a large iron-red rose surrounded by soft green foliage, cobalt-blue berries and flowers, and yellow-ochre accents. The molded godronné / gadrooned scalloped rim is finished with a loosely brush-painted cobalt-blue feathered border, giving the plate the wonderfully irregular character associated with traditional French country faience. This type of floral decoration is associated with the historic faience-producing region of eastern France and is seen in wares from Les Islettes, Lunéville, Saint-Clément and related workshops. The plate is unmarked, so a specific factory attribution cannot be made with certainty. The reverse is fully glazed and shows the characteristic irregularities of traditional faience production, including firing pinholes, glaze variation and what appear to be original kiln-stilt or pernette firing marks.
