A coordinated gallery of five original 1833 hand-colored hummingbird engravings from Sir William Jardine’s Naturalist’s Library, offered together in custom double mats of deep green with a narrow cool brown reveal, each finished to 9 × 12 in. All five come from Jardine’s second Humming-Birds volume, part of the subject with which the Naturalist’s Library launched in 1833.

ABOUT THE WORKS
The Naturalist’s Library began in March 1833 with hummingbirds, and its format was deliberately designed as an alternative to the enormous, expensive natural-history folios of the period. Contemporary advertisements stressed that each compact volume was complete in itself and could be purchased separately for six shillings, while still including roughly 30–40 hand-colored plates. Lizars knew the luxury end of ornithological publishing firsthand: his Edinburgh shop had engraved the first ten plates of John James Audubon’s Birds of America before that project moved to London. These Jardine hummingbirds belong to the other side of that story — an ambitious attempt to put serious, color-illustrated natural history within reach of a much broader audience.

The sheets show expected age-related toning, scattered foxing and spotting, light handling wear, and occasional localized discoloration, most noticeably on Trochilus pella; the imagery remains complete and well defined, and all five have been newly presented in clean archival double matting.
