Impressive vintage Japanese Hotei, or Laughing Buddha, ceramic figure featuring elaborate Kutani-style decoration with colorful hand-painted enamels, raised moriage detailing and extensive gold gilt accents.
Hotei is traditionally associated with happiness, contentment, abundance and good fortune and is one of Japan's Seven Gods of Good Fortune. This substantial figure depicts the smiling Hotei with his characteristic exposed belly, richly decorated robe and sack carried over his shoulder. He holds an ornate fan decorated with a bird motif.
The robe is exceptionally detailed, incorporating floral medallions, scrolling designs, geometric motifs and richly colored panels in red, blue, green, gold and earth tones. Raised enamel work throughout gives the decoration wonderful dimension and texture.
Believed to be Japanese and dating approximately to the mid-20th century, circa 1950s–1970s. No clearly identifiable maker's mark is present on the underside; therefore, the maker is listed as unknown. The piece is attributed stylistically to Japanese Kutani-style moriage ware based on its form and decorative technique.
Measurements: approximately 10.5" tall × 6.5" wide × 6.5" deep.
Weight: approximately 4 lb 3 oz.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with no significant chips, cracks or repairs observed. Minor variations in the hand-applied enamel, gilding and surface are consistent with the manufacturing process and age. Please review photographs for complete condition details.
