Antique American Classical Grecian-style settee, circa 1825–1840, featuring a shaped open back, sweeping scrolled arms, saber-form legs and a later coral-red painted finish. The back is especially appealing, with a broad shield-form center splat flanked by curving Classical splats that echo the lines of the arms.
The settee appears to have originally been fitted with a cane or woven seat; a solid wood seat platform was added at a later date. A newly made oatmeal-colored upholstered cushion provides a soft neutral counterpoint to the warm painted frame.
At only 38 inches wide, this is an unusually useful small settee for an entry, bedroom, dressing room, landing or tucked beside a fireplace.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
It is the scale and color that make this one so much fun. It is wonderfully suited to a smaller room, yet has enough presence to work beautifully in a larger space where a full-size settee would simply be too much. I would be very tempted to put it at the end of a bed or in an entry where that wonderful silhouette can be seen from across the room.

The coral-red painted finish is later and shows scattered rubbing, small losses, marks and areas of wear, particularly along the arms and other contact points, as photographed. The settee appears originally to have had a cane or woven seat; the present solid wood seat platform is a later replacement. Original casters are no longer present, with caster sockets remaining in the feet. Newly made removable seat cushion upholstered in oatmeal fabric.
