pair of American Art Deco figural cellist bookends by J.B. Hirsch, designed by noted sculptor John Ruhl and dating to 1932.
Each bookend depicts a seated musician leaning expressively over his cello, rendered in richly patinated bronzed metal with contrasting carved ivorine/celluloid-type head. The detailed modeling captures the musicians’ clothing, hands, shoes and instruments beautifully, while the two complementary poses give the pair an especially engaging presence when displayed together.
The figures are mounted on substantial rectangular black bases. One is impressed on the reverse with the J.B. Hirsch mark, 1932 date and J. Ruhl signature/initialing, identifying the design.
John Ruhl produced a number of collectible figural bookend designs during the early 20th century, including works for J.B. Hirsch. This cellist design is a particularly charming example, combining period sculpture, musical subject matter and classic 1930s decorative styling.
