These substantial armchairs are characterized by their strong architectural silhouette and beautifully balanced proportions. Broad upholstered armrests flow into the angular side panels, while the slightly reclined backrests and generously sized seat cushions create a comfortable and inviting seating position. Particularly elegant are the four slender, outward-splayed compass-style wooden legs, each terminating in a patinated brass foot. These refined details visually lift the substantial upholstered bodies from the floor and give the chairs a distinctly sophisticated French post-war character. The chairs retain their original red textured upholstery, which provides an interesting record of their history but now shows considerable wear, fading, staining and other signs of use consistent with age. Professional reupholstery is recommended. The existing upholstery therefore offers an excellent opportunity for the new owner to select a fabric that complements the sculptural form and generous proportions of the chairs. The internal structures are solid and stable, making these chairs an excellent basis for professional restoration.
