Bjørn Wiinblad’s design for the 1972 Anton Michelsen Christmas spoon is one of the most charming in the whole series. The gilded sterling handle is cut and pierced to a heart-like shape and enameled with one of his unmistakable round faces, crowned by a radiating crescent and framed by feathers in seven shades from pale gray-white through rose to deep crimson. The reverse is engraved "Jul 1972" with a facsimile of Wiinblad’s signature.

Michelsen made these spoons in a single year only, destroying the dies afterward, so each is a small limited edition. The firm recorded 38 hand operations per spoon, including three separate enamel firings before the final gilding, and the enamel here is as fresh as the day it left Copenhagen.

It is a lovely thing for a Christmas table, a stocking, or a collector filling in the years, and it looks just as good in a small frame or a shadow box with other Scandinavian enamels.
