An exceptional and imposing 19th-century Rococo Revival pier mirror with its matching console, distinguished by monumental scale, elaborate carved ornament, and a highly architectural presence. Dating to approximately 1860–1875, the ensemble is likely Continental European or American, reflecting the renewed enthusiasm for French Rococo and Baroque design during the mid-Victorian period.
The tall giltwood mirror measures an impressive 82 inches high by 36 inches wide and is crowned by an exuberantly pierced and carved crest. Deeply modeled C- and S-scrolls, acanthus foliage, flowers, fruit and ornamental flourishes surround a distinctive female mask, creating a particularly sculptural composition. Floral and foliate carving continues around the frame, contrasting beautifully with its more restrained architectural moldings.
The original matching console completes the ensemble. Its gracefully shaped serpentine top features a faux-marble painted finish in warm cream with gray veining, above a gilt apron decorated with dimensional carved roses and scrolling foliage. Slender architectural side supports and pendant details maintain the light, elegant appearance expected of a period pier console.
Construction visible from the reverse—including substantial pierced timber, traditional joinery, separately applied carved ornament and naturally aged wood—supports a third-quarter 19th-century date. The gilded surfaces show age, wear and evidence of later restoration, contributing to the ensemble's richly layered historic character.
At approximately 106 inches overall height, this is a dramatic architectural furnishing ideally suited to a grand foyer, salon, dining room or historic interior.
