the item has a distinctive floral, eight-petaled shape. The individual compartments allowed for convenient sorting of nails by size. The upper section rotates on a central spindle relative to the solid, contoured base, allowing the user to easily reach the desired compartment.

this is an example of early american industrial workshop equipment, which is now also valued as a decorative collector’s item.

organizers of this type are known as “star nail cups” and were used primarily in shoemakers’ workshops. Surviving examples come in several variants, including those with six and eight compartments.

similar examples are also described on the market as late 19th-century items; therefore, without a legible manufacturer’s mark, it is safer to assume the early 20th century rather than assign a specific year.

the item has retained the authentic, raw surface of cast iron characteristic of old tools and workshop equipment. Signs of use have not been removed, allowing it to retain its original industrial character.

note: in the comparison photos, an identical 8-compartment star nail cup is described as a shoemaking and cast-iron item; one of the surviving examples bears the inscription “star nail cup” on its base. However, i wouldn’t list “star nail cup” in the ad as a definitive mark for your piece if that inscription isn’t present on your base. It’s safer to use it as the name of the item’s type. It’s important not to attribute a manufacturer to it without proof. See less
