The exterior is … Read more A rectangular Japanese lacquer box made of wood, measuring approximately 4.2 × 16.3 × 5.3 cm (H/W/D). The exterior is lacquered in deep black, while the interior is a vibrant red. The lid features a detailed decoration depicting various Japanese fans (sensu and uchiwa) with landscape scenes such as Mount Fuji, floral motifs, and a small beetle. The object originates from Japan and likely dates to the late Meiji period or the early 20th century. These lacquerware pieces were traditionally crafted at sea, as only there could the dust-free conditions necessary for the delicate lacquer finish be found. A clasp is attached to the front, but the key is missing. The box is in age-appropriate condition with visible signs of use, abrasions, minor chips in the lacquer, and oxidized hinges. See less
