A finely handwoven Aubusson tapestry from the mid-20th century, entitled Verdure Bleue, the tapestry is woven in a sophisticated palette of muted blues, sage greens, ochres, warm browns, ivory and dusty rose. The composition depicts an idyllic French pastoral landscape, framed by large, richly foliated trees. In the distance, a picturesque medieval-style château or fortified village rises among softly rendered hills and mountains, while a stone bridge crosses a winding stream in the middle ground. The foreground is animated by a graceful heron beside the water, surrounded by luxuriant vegetation, flowering plants and woodland foliage. The elaborate floral border is particularly characteristic, with scrolling leaves, carnations, roses and other stylized blossoms arranged around the four sides.
