The lid is adorned with a striking oval gold lacquer medallion depicting four small birds on a flowering branch, while the surrounding surface of the lid and the sides are decorated with subtle, dark floral patterns. The object originates from japan and can be dated to the late meiji period or the early 20th century. These lacquerware pieces were traditionally made at sea, as only there could the dust-free conditions be found that were essential for the delicate lacquerwork. A metal clasp with a decorative keyhole escutcheon is attached to the front, but a matching key is missing. The box is in used condition with clear signs of age, including superficial scratches, edge chips, and wear to the lacquer. Please direct any inquiries via the ebay email system.
