The elongated, rectangular … Read more The box measures approximately 6 × 37.1 × 9.3 cm (H/W/D) and is made of lacquered wood. The elongated, rectangular box features an elaborate gold and silver lacquer design on a deep, reddish-brown background, depicting a large flower and a bird flying above it. A Japanese signature in gold lacquer is located on the lower right edge of the lid. The object originates from Japan and is likely dated to the Meiji period (early 20th century). The sides of the box are decorated with a continuous band of dark floral ornaments. A metal clasp is present, but no key is included. These lacquerware pieces were traditionally produced at sea, as only there could the dust-free conditions be found that were essential for the delicate lacquer finish. The piece shows clear signs of age and use in the form of scratches, abrasions, and small losses in the lacquer surface. See less
