The near-spherical … Read more A substantial sculptural vessel by Stan Langtwait for Shapes of Clay, Graham, Washington, dating to circa the 1960s–1970s. The near-spherical form is built up with heavily textured, irregular clay masses, creating a dramatic openwork surface of fissures, voids and overlapping geological forms.

The rugged earthen surface is enriched with blue-green and turquoise coloration that settles into the recesses and openings, producing considerable depth and contrast against the natural earth tones of the clay. At five pounds, the vessel has significant physical presence and reads as a sculptural object as much as a functional vase.

Langtwait established Shapes of Clay in Graham, Washington, during the 1950s and became known for organic ceramic forms inspired by the materials and landscape of the Pacific Northwest. This large vessel represents the more sculptural side of his production, with its emphatic texture, abstract openwork and distinctly Brutalist character. The piece bears a faint but visible “Stan” signature.
