Produced … Read more A mid-twentieth-century John Beswick Ltd. mallard duck figure, Model 817, depicting the squatting drake form modelled by Mr. Watkin. Produced at Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, the figure reflects Beswick’s established tradition of naturalistic animal sculpture and finely finished ceramic modelling.

The male mallard is presented in a low, alert stance with a glossy deep-green head, yellow bill, mottled brown plumage, blue wing speculum and darker tail feathers. The moulded form is complemented by hand-finished painted decoration, giving the bird a lively naturalistic presence. The figure stands on the characteristic pale polygonal base associated with the model.

Beswick founded its Longton pottery in 1894 and became especially well known during the mid-twentieth century for horses, dogs, birds and other animal figures. Model 817 was produced from circa 1940 until approximately 1969/70, placing this example within the classic period of Beswick animal production.
