Beautifully constructed of walnut with richly figured walnut veneers, these handsome chests combine the romance and decorative character of traditional French furniture with the exceptional quality and attention to detail for which Baker has long been recognized.

Each commode presents a wonderfully architectural façade, with two spacious drawers arranged beneath a shaped rectangular top. The fronts are distinguished by an elaborate arrangement of raised and molded panels, creating depth, movement, and a distinctly French character. The projecting center section is particularly attractive, with shaped paneling and vertical molded details that give the casework an almost architectural rhythm. Gracefully curved drawer fronts at either side soften the composition and contribute to the commodes' elegant Provincial silhouette.

The warm walnut surfaces are especially appealing. Beautiful variations in the grain and veneer create a rich range of honey, amber, caramel, and deeper brown tones, giving the pieces a wonderfully mellow appearance. The walnut has developed the inviting warmth associated with finely made vintage furniture, while the darker outlining of the molded decoration emphasizes the craftsmanship and gives the façades remarkable visual dimension.
