A remarkably decorative pair of large vintage Italian-style wall brackets, combining sculptural Rococo scrollwork with a beautifully time-softened palette of muted celadon green, deep umber brown and rubbed antique gold.
Measuring an impressive 18 inches wide with a substantial nine-inch projection, each bracket provides the scale and architectural presence needed to anchor a thoughtfully layered traditional interior. Unlike diminutive ornamental corbels, these generously proportioned brackets incorporate broad, serpentine display shelves suitable for showcasing collected ceramics, small busts, covered urns, candlesticks or other treasured decorative objects following appropriate wall installation.
The design centers on an exuberant openwork rocaille cartouche composed of deeply modeled C-scrolls, curled foliage and acanthus-inspired ornament. Sweeping outer scrolls rise toward the shelf above, while molded leaf details and a compact lower terminal complete the bracket’s balanced, architectural silhouette.
Their nuanced finish is especially compelling. A quiet celadon or dusty-aqua ground is framed by dark umber-painted borders and raised ornament, with scattered glimpses of aged gold emerging through the deliberately rubbed surface. The effect is neither bright nor overly formal. Instead, the brackets possess the mellow, collected character of Continental pieces that have been layered naturally into a home over time.
The broad shelf tops follow an elegant undulating outline with softened corners and a shallow central rise. Fine linear texture remains visible across the painted surfaces, contributing to the handcrafted appearance of the finish. Viewed from the side, the deep projection and sculptural scroll supports give each bracket the presence of a small architectural furnishing rather than a simple wall accessory.
For a designer, the pair offers exceptional possibilities for creating symmetry and vertical interest. Position them on either side of a gilt mirror, framed landscape, doorway, chimney breast or favorite painting. They would also be striking above a console, flanking a tall cabinet or bookcase, or displayed independently as sculptural architectural accents.
Their celadon-and-umber palette would layer beautifully with blue-and-white porcelain, transferware, framed botanicals, English pottery, antique brass, dark wood furniture, linen, ticking stripes, faded florals and quietly patterned upholstery. The mood is especially suited to an English Country sitting room, collected traditional living room, Grandmillennial bedroom, warm library or Nancy Meyers-inspired interior where elegance comes from comfort, patina and objects gathered over time.
The brackets retain substantial dark-painted rear reinforcement panels with corresponding central mounting blocks or cleats. The matching construction across the pair indicates a deliberately assembled, reinforced design. Their weight, depth and intended display use make secure installation into appropriate structural wall support essential; professional installation is recommended.
Although originally auction-cataloged as wall sconces, these pieces contain no sockets, wiring or electrical components. They are more accurately identified as decorative wall brackets, bracket shelves or sconce shelves—the historical term “sconce shelf” referring to a wall-mounted platform used to display an object rather than an electric light.
A dramatic and highly decorative matched pair offering the old-world movement of Rococo ornament, the glamour of Hollywood Regency and the relaxed warmth required for today’s most inviting traditional interiors.
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION NOTES
The pair is unmarked, and no maker’s label or country-of-origin inscription was observed. The Italian designation therefore describes the brackets’ design vocabulary rather than establishing manufacture in Italy.
Their scrolling rocaille ornament, acanthus-inspired details, serpentine shelf profiles, antiqued gilding and symmetrical presentation draw from Italian and French Rococo decorative traditions as interpreted through late-20th-century Hollywood Regency design.
The original auction catalog identified the brackets as painted resin. Close examination of exposed areas reveals a pale, granular cast material that may be resin, plaster-composition or a related molded composite. Because the material has not been laboratory tested, it is cataloged conservatively as cast resin or plaster-composition.
The molded ornamental bodies are combined with dark-painted structural back panels, shaped shelf elements, projecting mounting blocks and visible metal fasteners. This reinforced, multi-part construction contributes to the pair’s substantial scale and weight.
AUCTION DOCUMENTATION AND IDENTIFICATION
The pair was acquired through an auction and cataloged as “Pair Decorative Italian Hollywood Regency Style Painted Resin Wall Sconces,” measuring approximately 18 inches wide by 9 inches deep by 11½ inches high.
The original auction cataloging supports the painted-resin material, Italian-inspired design and Hollywood Regency-style identification used in this listing. The objects are more precisely described as decorative wall brackets, bracket shelves or sconce shelves rather than electrical wall sconces, as they contain no sockets, wiring or lighting components.
No maker’s mark, country-of-origin label or “Made in Italy” inscription was observed on the visible surfaces. They are therefore cataloged as Italian style rather than definitively manufactured in Italy.

Both brackets retain their shaped shelf tops, openwork central rocaille cartouches, sweeping side scrolls, molded foliate details, dark rear reinforcement panels and projecting mounting blocks. The celadon, umber and gold surfaces display considerable intentional rubbing and finish variation designed to evoke the appearance of older painted and gilt architectural ornament. Additional age-related wear is also present, including scattered scratches, abrasions, small chips, edge nicks and localized paint and gilt loss. The most noticeable wear occurs along the projecting shelf lips, outer corners, scroll tips, molded edges and raised areas of ornament. Several shelf-edge and corner losses expose the pale cast composition beneath the painted surface. Minor surface irregularities, small pits and textural variation are present throughout. The shelf tops display scattered marks, faint discoloration, small pale specks and natural variation in the brushed or striated painted finish. The two brackets vary subtly in surface wear, as expected of a vintage matched pair. No major structural cracks, large breaks, obvious repairs or significant missing ornamental sections were observed in the supplied photographs. The central openwork designs and large supporting scrolls remain visually complete. The dark-painted reverse panels and central mounting blocks display light surface wear. Visible metal fasteners remain present. The brackets have not been load-tested, and wall-mounting fasteners are not included. Due to their weight and nine-inch projection, professional installation into appropriate structural support is strongly recommended before displaying objects. Please review all photographs closely, particularly the shelf edges, corners, projecting scrolls, central ornament, painted surfaces, reverse construction and mounting blocks. less
