An exceptional and rare late 18th/early 19th-century English Georgian or American Federal period mahogany cellarette (wine cooler) on a integrated stand.
Celebrated for its compact, petite proportions and perfectly square footprint, this sophisticated dining room piece represents the height of Neoclassical furniture design, blending utilitarian purpose with premium cabinetmaking techniques heavily influenced by the designs of Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite.
The Lid & Exterior Case consist of the hinged, square top features a brilliantly figured panel of book-matched flame (crotch) mahogany veneer, displaying deep natural chatoyancy and grain definition.
This central panel is bordered by a delicate boxwood (or holly) stringing line inlay, transitioning seamlessly into an elegant mitered, crossbanded mahogany outer border.
The main case consists of tight-grained mahogany panels displaying a beautifully aged, deep amber patina and a highly clear historic shellac finish.
The lid opens on flush-recessed brass butt hinges to reveal a highly preserved, original three-partition interior configuration. The three deep, canted bottle divisions are cleanly lined in a traditional, historical emerald-green felt, meticulously engineered to safely house hand-blown glass wine, port, or spirit decanters.
The sides of the case retain two heavy, cast-brass neoclassical bail handles (carrying handles) secured by period-correct slotted wood screws.
The entire unit is raised on four elegantly slender, square-tapered legs terminating in fine string-inlaid detailing and original brass cup-socket casters with integrated brass roller wheels.
The back panel displays a single clean, historic horizontal shrinkage separation line across the grain, serving as definitive, highly sought-after material evidence of 200+ years of natural atmospheric aging in solid wood.
Exceptional antique used condition, retaining an excellent finish and deep historic coloration. Structural stability is highly robust with all four tapered legs and casters perfectly secure. Brass hardware retains a beautifully polished glow with highly authentic, natural dark oxidation remaining inside recessed crevices. Minor age-appropriate wear, including superficial scuffs, minute surface indentations, and a stable horizontal shrinkage line on the rear backboard that does not compromise structural integrity.
