The collaboration between the Rosenthal porcelain manufactory and the world-renowned Milanese architect and designer Mario Bellini in the mid-1980s (1985/1987) resulted in one of the most iconic and distinctive tableware collections of the postmodern era: the "Cupola" design.

Bellini translated architectural concepts directly onto porcelain. The designs are based on pure geometric forms such as cylinders and cones.

The cupola, from which the collection takes its name, is a distinctive domed shape. It reappears as a defining design principle on the lids (e.g., of teapots and sugar bowls) as well as in the relief.
