This handsome vintage sterling silver money clip combines classic American coinage with substantial silver craftsmanship, creating a distinctive gentleman’s accessory with wonderful historical character.
The centerpiece is an authentic circulated 1907 Barber Half Dollar, securely incorporated into the front of the clip. Rather than simply being applied as decoration, the coin is incorporated into an articulated hinged frame, allowing the coin portion to lift upward—a clever mechanical detail that gives the piece both visual interest and functionality. The broad sterling clip at the back provides a secure place for folded currency.
Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, the Barber Half Dollar was struck from 1892 through 1915. Its obverse depicts Liberty wearing a Phrygian-style cap and laurel wreath, surrounded by stars and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The series circulated extensively during an important period of American history spanning the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, and surviving examples frequently display the honest wear associated with everyday commerce. This particular 1907 half dollar retains its wonderfully circulated surface, with softened details, scattered marks, and patina that speak to its original life as currency before it was transformed into a gentleman's accessory. A small “J” has been counterstamped into the face of Liberty. This is not an original U.S. Mint marking and was added sometime after the coin entered circulation, possibly as an owner's initial or other form of personalization. Its precise origin remains unknown, adding another intriguing layer to the coin's history.
Overall measures approximately 2.5 inches deep, 1.25 inches wide, and 0.50 inch high, with a substantial total weight of approximately 44 grams. The clip is marked "Sterling 925". Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
The contrast between the well-traveled early American coin and the clean, substantial sterling silver construction gives the piece tremendous character. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of vintage gentleman's accessories, American coin silver, numismatics, or sterling desk and personal objects, while remaining functional as a money clip today.
