A whimsical mid-century modern heavy brass figural trinket box sculpted in the form of a plump, stylized hippopotamus. This highly collectible piece showcases a wonderful contrast of finishes—the face and base are smoothed down, while the rounded exterior body features hand-chased, linear textures and perked-up ears.
The top half opens effortlessly via a delicate, original brass decorative hinge and a secure front latch clasp. The inside reveals a bright, striking silver-washed finish, paying a clever homage to the traditional antique Southeast Asian betel nut boxes that inspired its design. The underside is crisply stamped with the vintage manufacturer hallmark: "WOCO - Made in Hong Kong".
Originally retailed through high-end American department stores and boutiques during the peak 1960s/1970s Hollywood Regency and global eclectic movements, this heavy sculptural object makes a fantastic conversation piece. It is perfect as a desk organizer, a unique jewelry dish, or an eye-catching accent for an eclectic shelf display.
