This is Motiv 33 from the Temi e Variazioni (Themes and Variations) wall-plate series that Rosenthal of Germany produced in the 1980s after designs by Piero Fornasetti, printed in black and white with a gilt rim. The design shows Fornasetti's signature image, the face of the opera singer Lina Cavalieri, breaking into a Cubist grid of squares: individual blocks tilt forward as shaded cubes, one carrying an eye, while the lower part of the face tumbles away in a heap of loose blocks. Fornasetti based more than 350 variations on Cavalieri's face, and the Rosenthal series, sometimes called the Julia plates in the trade, brought a selection of them to a new audience.

The reverse carries the printed black roundel mark reading Rosenthal Germany, the Fornasetti hand-and-paintbrush device, FORNASETTI, Dekor: Temi e variazioni, Motiv 33, and is pierced for hanging. The plate comes with its original box. Condition is good. A single plate holds a wall on its own, and these mix well in a hung group with other Fornasetti or black-and-white transferware.
