An unusual antique ceramic art nouveau dragon pitcher manufactured by the Swedish company Rörstrand, dating circa 1900. The dragon jug—or drakkanna—is pure Art Nouveau drama depicting a whimsical stylized dragon in relief. The dragon's open jaws form the main spout while the wings and body form the handle. The piece is finished with a warm, shaded ivory/beige and brown glaze emphasizing textured details. The design is heavily associated with the prominent Swedish Art Nouveau artist and designer Alf Wallander who was artistic director at Rörstrand and a pioneer in Swedish Art Nouveau.
The pitcher is 10.5 in. Height and in very good condition with age-appropriate crazing overall. Fully marked on the base with a printed red Rorstrand 3 crowns mark over Made in Sweden. There are several impressed letters and numbers: EV / IVORY / ? C [underlined].
