Striking pair of tall sculptural candle holders in the Hollywood Regency and Modernist style, attributed to Maitland Smith. Dating to the late 20th century, they combine richly patterned faux tortoiseshell over wood with polished stainless steel accents and contrasting dark spherical elements.
Each candle holder rises from a substantial stepped square base with stainless steel detailing. A geometric faux tortoiseshell pedestal supports a black sphere measuring approximately 3 1/2" in diameter. Above, a slender rectangular faux tortoiseshell column terminates in a second black metal sphere measuring approximately 3" in diameter.
The architectural form, polished metal, faux tortoiseshell and bold spherical elements give the pair a distinctive 1970s Hollywood Regency and Modernist appearance. At 19" high, they have wonderful scale and make striking decorative accents on a console, mantel, dining table or large chest.
