A striking and highly sculptural pair of French Mid-Century lounge chairs dating from the 1950s, crafted in solid teak with woven cane seats and backrests. The chairs feature a particularly architectural construction, defined by their low-slung proportions, geometric frames and distinctive continuous armrests. The substantial teak structure extends from the floor around the armrests, giving the chairs a strong sculptural presence from every angle. The slightly reclined cane backrests and exceptionally low seat height create the relaxed proportions characteristic of modernist lounge furniture of the period. The combination of warm teak and natural woven cane provides a beautiful contrast and gives the chairs a refined yet understated appearance. Particularly attractive are the exposed construction and geometric lines visible from the sides and rear, making these chairs equally interesting when placed freely within a room rather than against a wall. The design shows influences associated with post-war architectural furniture and has a character reminiscent of French and Chandigarh modernism. No specific designer attribution is being made. The teak has developed a warm and attractive patina. The chairs remain in good vintage condition, showing minor wear and traces of use consistent with their age. The cane is present in both the seats and backrests. Please examine the detailed photographs for an accurate impression of their condition. An unusual and highly decorative pair of architectural lounge chairs that works particularly well in Mid-Century Modern, modernist, brutalist and contemporary interiors.
