The design … Read more A Louis Philippe washstand, circa 1860, with a hinged top, an integrated mirror, and an inset marble top. The design is entirely devoid of ornamentation, relying instead on the curved cornice, the even spacing of the four drawers, and the continuous veneer grain, giving the piece a closed and calmly proportioned appearance despite its height.

Features: Hinged lid with an internal, framed mirror, guided by brass hinges and a locking bar that holds the lid in the open position. Three-sided upstand of marble, the back and side panels of which are fitted into the curved sides of the upper section.

Design by Louis Philippe, circa 1860. The construction follows the principle of clear horizontal layering: base, drawer unit, upper section with a curved cornice. The front edges of the cabinet are rounded and accentuated by narrow, chamfered pilasters; profiled frame moldings surround each drawer front, giving the front a uniform grid pattern. The locks are flush-mounted. Ornamental decoration is entirely absent – ​​the design effect arises solely from proportion, profile lines, and the mirrored veneer grain, an approach characteristic of mid-century French furniture production. Former function: Washstand and toilet furniture in the bedroom or dressing room, with a marble surface for a pitcher and bowl, as well as a mirror for personal hygiene. Today: usable as a chest of drawers in the bedroom or hallway, as dressing and vanity furniture, or as a sideboard; the marble surface, when open, serves as a washable shelf.

Dimensions: Height 99 cm × Width 89 cm × Depth 50 cm. Height with the lid open and mirrored: 149 cm. Material and condition: Cherry (merisier), burl veneer on the front, base, and top; white marble top. Four drawers, key included. Base on pressed feet with casters. Used, age-appropriate condition with visible patina. The age-related cracks on the sides have been filled and sealed. The marble top has small cracks in one corner. The mirror glass shows heavy patina with flat areas in the coating – see photos. Refurbishment was carried out by Kastellan: The surfaces were completely refinished – sanded, treated appropriately, and oiled. Two small veneer bubbles on the surface were re-glued and secured; no further chipping is expected. The piece of furniture was inspected, cleaned, treated appropriately for the material, structurally checked, and is stable and functional. See less
