Late 1800s - Early 1900s solid brass surveyor's transit instrument (or transit level or transit device) used by a surveyor around the turn of the century to provide accurate readings and civil and structural engineering. This device would have rested on a wooden tripod (not included). The instrument spins and operates freely. An inscription on the base reads "M. P. Ry. - M. of W. No. 4".
Transits are optical instruments used in surveying and construction to measure precise horizontal and vertical angles.
