Pair of authentic, hand-blown studio art glass desert/accent plates from the renowned Cowdy Glass Workshop (Gloucestershire, England), that was active as a production studio from the late 1970s to early 1980s.
These round plates feature a striking, dense blue base that bleeds out into gradients of speckled/mottled light blue and translucent, clear light pink. This gorgeous ombré effect—a style developed by elite glass artist Pauline Solven—catches the light spectacularly.
Known for their dimensional art glass, the studio focused primarily on statement decanters and bowls - plates were made in small quantities, making a matching pair highly collectible.
The plates can be displayed as art glass as well as being presented as beautiful dessert plates for petit fours or cookies.
Authenticity: Both pieces are individually hand-etched "Cowdy" on the blue base. The translucent signatures are faint and highly reflective, making them difficult to capture perfectly in photos; please see the enlarged photo showing the signature.
Provenance: This matching pair includes the original, undated Gallery Provenance Sheet on the official letterhead of the Westminster Gallery (Newbury Street, Boston, MA). Active from 1980 to 1987, Westminster was America's premier venue for British crafts imported from English artisans by its founder, Kenneth Bridgewater. This documented history adds credible provenance and verifies these plates as authentic, early-1980s English art glass.
