18th C. Architectural Folio Engraving: Columns of Trajan & Antoninus
Provenance Custom Framed by J. Pocker & Son, NYC
Frame Approx. 22 1/2" Wide x 29 3/4" High.
Engraving Image Approx. 13 ½" Wide x 21" High (Standard Imperial/Double Folio sizing)
Authentic, multi-plate early 18th-century vertical folio engraving depicting the Triumphal Columns of Trajan and Antoninus side-by-side in Rome. The intricate linework and cross-hatching reflect the master styles utilized in late Renaissance and Baroque Italian folio volumes (such as those by Francesco Villamena and the De Rossi press).
The pedestals accurately replicate the historical papal restorations commissioned by Pope Sixtus V in 1589, complete with full Latin architectural inscriptions.
This piece is housed in a mid-century gilt-wood frame with an inner gold mat accent line. The framing was executed by J. Pocker & Son, one of New York City’s most prestigious historic custom framers (established 1926). Known for museum-quality conservation, the archival backing and professional matting have kept this antique print in excellent condition, shielding it from typical environmental wear.
From the Private Estate of David J. Bikoff, M.D., P.A., of New Jersey.
Good used antique condition. The print displays signs of age consistent with a 250+ year old piece of handmade paper. Visible condition features include a prominent horizontal drying fold line across the lower quarter (indicating original book binding), a paper separation tear in the upper right background quadrant, a minor paper puncture, and vintage water staining/foxing along the lower and side borders. Ready for hanging.
