This is an exceptional pair of antique English brass and iron fireplace andirons dating to the late Victorian/early Edwardian period, circa 1890–1905. Tall and architecturally proportioned, each features a slender fluted brass standard surmounted by an urn-form finial and decorated with finely engraved Neoclassical floral and medallion motifs.
The decorative brass fronts are joined to substantial iron fire supports extending 16 inches into the hearth, complete with shaped rear supports and finial details. The rear supports are capped in brass which has been blackened by actual use in a fireplace. Professional polishing could restore the brass. The front alone measures 2.5”w at the top and 1.5” at the bottom. The iron framework retains old slotted fasteners and is stamped “ENGLAND”, along with additional “PR” markings.
Especially appealing is the beautifully aged, untouched surface. The brass has developed a deep, mellow brown patina that complements the darkened ironwork and gives the pair tremendous character. They have intentionally not been polished, preserving the surface acquired through generations of use.
A handsome and unusually tall pair with wonderful presence—equally suited to a working period fireplace or as sculptural architectural accents in a traditional, English country, Neoclassical or collected interior.
