Striking vintage Japanese Kutani ware figure depicting Hotei (布袋), one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods and popularly known in Western collecting as the Laughing Buddha.

This substantial figure is richly decorated with colorful raised moriage-style enamel work, elaborate floral and scrolling patterns, and extensive gilt accents. Hotei is depicted with his characteristic smiling expression, rounded belly and traditional sack carried over his shoulder.

The underside bears an impressed Japanese Kutani (九谷) mark, identifying the figure as Kutani ware. The individual artist or workshop has not been identified.
