Antique Japanese Fushimi Ningyo folk art clay doll figurine depicting Hotei, the beloved Shinto and Buddhist deity of happiness, contentment, and abundance.
Hotei—popularly recognized worldwide as the Laughing Buddha—is shown here with his signature wide, joyous laugh, large exposed belly, a fan in one hand, and his giant bag of treasures draped over his shoulder.
This piece features a distinctively dark, weathered surface. Traditionally, families displayed Hotei figurines on a household altar shelf in the kitchen area. Over decades, smoke from cooking hearths and incense naturally coated the bright mineral pigments, transforming the surface into a beautiful soot-darkened patina highly prized by collectors.
