Bring a piece of Southeast Asian history and art into your home with this magnificent vintage Burmese Hintha bird-shaped betel box, traditionally known as a kun-it.
This exceptional piece carries an important, documented diplomatic provenance. It was originally purchased in Rangoon, Burma, by the current owner's aunt while she was stationed there serving as a US diplomat in the early 1960s. It has been meticulously kept within the family ever since.
Dating from the early to mid-20th century (circa 1920s–1940s), this exquisite piece is a spectacular testament to the masterful craftsmanship of traditional Burmese lacquerware.
The Hintha bird, a mythical and sacred goose, holds a special place in Burmese culture. It serves as a prominent symbol of royalty, purity, and perfect union, making this box not just a high-end decorative statement but a piece deeply steeped in cultural heritage.
Handcrafted from a woven or wooden lacquered base, this box is meticulously decorated with brilliant gold leaf using traditional gilt application. It features highly detailed, intricate molded relief work (thayo) across the exterior framework.
The outer surface is beautifully adorned with shimmering pieces of inlaid colored glass and mirror elements that catch the ambient light from every angle.
The masterfully designed two-part construction of the bird's body separates cleanly at the waist, revealing a shallow interior storage compartment traditionally used to hold ingredients for a betel quid.
The exceptionally detailed hand-carving of the layered feathers, elegant wings, and detailed face highlights the incredible skill of the regional artisan.
