It features traditional steam-bent oak wood fastened along a prominent vertical overlap seam. The seam is bound securely with rivets characteristic of Shaker style or New England manufacturing.
Complete with its original matching fitted wooden rim lid, these primitive boxes were highly valued in 19th-century and early 20th-century kitchens for storing dry foodstuffs, spices, or household items while protecting them from moisture and pests.
The strong, pronounced open-grain texture visible swirling around the perimeter of the box is highly characteristic of native North American ring-porous hardwoods like oak. See less
