Historical Background: On April 4, 1962, Dr. José A. Bonilla Atiles, Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic, met with President John F. Kennedy in the Oval Office to present a custom hand-carved rocking chair on behalf of the Dominican people. Designed to accommodate JFK’s well-known preference for rocking chairs to ease back pain, the original piece featured dual carved seals on the crest celebrating diplomatic relations. This item is a detailed reproduction of that historic presidential gift.
Item Features & Craftsmanship:
Dual Carved Seals: The top headrest crest features high-relief carvings of The Great Seal of the United States alongside the National Coat of Arms of the Dominican Republic.
Finial & Frame Accents: Features carved pineapple finials on the post caps (traditionally symbolizing hospitality), leaf accents along the upright posts, and turned spindle stretchers.
Woven Rush Detailing: Authentic woven rush/cane back panel and thick woven rush seat.
Condition: Pre-owned vintage reproduction in very good condition. Solid wood frame is sturdy with natural patina, minor finish scuffs, and surface wear consistent with age. The rush seat and back weaving remain tight and intact. (Please review photos for exact cosmetic details).
Maker: Unmarked / Unknown Maker. Handmade
