Striking vintage pair of solid burl wood bookends featuring naturally sculptural live-edge forms, richly figured grain and warm reddish-brown tones. Each bookend retains the rugged exterior character of the original burl while the book-facing sides have been cut flat and polished to showcase the beautiful natural grain.

The two pieces are intentionally irregular and individually shaped, giving the pair a wonderful organic, one-of-a-kind appearance. Their substantial size and combined weight of approximately 5 lb 11 oz make them functional for supporting larger books while also allowing them to display beautifully as sculptural objects on a bookshelf, desk, credenza or library shelf.

Likely dating to the mid-to-late 20th century, approximately the 1960s–1970s. Maker is unknown/unmarked. Wood species has not been definitively identified; appearance is consistent with burl wood and possibly redwood burl.

Condition:
Good vintage condition with natural cracks, fissures, knots, voids, bark loss and irregularities throughout. These characteristics are inherent to the natural burl and contribute to the rustic sculptural appearance. Polished cut surfaces show some age-related marks/scratches.
