The substantial rounded vessel is decorated in cobalt blue, yellow and green with scrolling foliate ornament, combining a practical covered storage form with the Renaissance-derived decorative traditions associated with Deruta ceramic production.

The jar is formed in tin-glazed earthenware, or maiolica, with a thickly potted body and fitted lid. Its underside is inscribed “Gialletti Giulio / Deruta / Dip. a mano,” identifying the maker and confirming the decoration as hand painted. The substantial 3.6 lb weight is consistent with the robust construction of larger Deruta kitchen and tableware forms.

Produced by Ceramiche Artistiche Gialletti Giulio, founded in Deruta in 1959, the jar dates to the late twentieth century, with a working date of approximately the 1980s–1990s. Its large scale, surviving lid, documented maker and hand-painted decoration distinguish it from smaller and more commonly encountered Gialletti tableware.
