Large hand-thrown American studio stoneware bowl signed “chad,” found in Northeast Arkansas and attributed to ceramic artist Chad Alan Graves. The artist personally reviewed photographs and said it may be a piece he sold when he first began making pottery at Arkansas State University.
This substantial studio pottery bowl measures approximately 11.5" wide × 11" deep × 6" high and weighs approximately 5 pounds. It is wheel-thrown stoneware with a raised foot, heavy rounded rim, textured cream interior, and an expressive mottled glaze combining earthy brown, olive-gray, cream, tan, and burgundy-plum tones.
The underside is signed “chad” in lowercase letters.
WHAT TYPE OF POTTERY IS IT?
This is a:
◆ Hand-thrown studio pottery bowl
◆ High-fired stoneware vessel
◆ Large footed ceramic centerpiece
◆ Signed American studio pottery piece
◆ Possible early Arkansas studio pottery work
◆ One-of-a-kind artisan-made object
The glaze has substantial natural variation, including speckling, mottling, mineral-like coloration, and irregular glaze movement characteristic of individually made studio ceramics.
SIZE
◆ Width: 11.5"
◆ Depth: 11"
◆ Height: 6"
◆ Weight: approximately 5 lb
Its unusually substantial weight and deep form give the bowl considerably more presence than a standard decorative ceramic bowl.
CONDITION
Good preowned condition.
◆ No chips
◆ No cracks
◆ No known repairs
◆ Glaze remains glossy and visually striking
◆ Natural glaze variation and handmade irregularities are present
WHY IS THIS BOWL COLLECTIBLE?
This piece combines several characteristics desirable in American studio pottery:
◆ Hand-thrown construction
◆ Large sculptural scale
◆ Approximately 5-pound weight
◆ Artist signature
◆ Regional Arkansas provenance
◆ Direct correspondence with the possible artist
◆ Potential connection to an artist's formative ASU period
◆ One-of-a-kind glaze pattern and coloration
Rather than mass-produced ceramic décor, this bowl represents the individual hand of a studio potter.
AESTHETIC & DESIGN STYLE
The natural form and earthy glaze palette work particularly well within:
◆ Organic Modern
◆ Wabi-Sabi
◆ Japandi
◆ Rustic Modern
PROVENANCE
Acquired in the Jonesboro / Northeast Arkansas area.
During subsequent research, Arkansas ceramic artist Chad Alan Graves was contacted directly and shown photographs of the bowl and its signature. His response indicated that the piece may be one of the bowls he made and sold during his earliest pottery studies at Arkansas State University.
WHO MADE THIS POTTERY BOWL?
The bowl is attributed to Arkansas ceramic artist Chad Alan Graves.
The attribution is based on:
◆ Lowercase “chad” signature on the underside
◆ Bowl discovered in the Jonesboro, Arkansas region
◆ Chad Graves's documented connection to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro
◆ His formal ceramics background
◆ His early production of hand-thrown stoneware
◆ Direct communication with the artist after he viewed photographs of this bowl
Because the artist did not definitively authenticate the piece, it is being accurately offered as attributed to Chad Alan Graves rather than confirmed as his work.
